Alive in Egypt

Alive In Egypt was an emergency response effort created to leverage the Google and Twitter @speak2tweet dial-to-tweet service. Both companies wanted to see these phone conversations translated into English (most were in Arabic) and asked outside organizations for assistance. Small World News and Yamli, two organizations associated by friendship, assembled a core team whose mission was to bring the voices of Egyptians directly to those who could not understand Arabic.

With the backbone of Speak2Tweet and the community of translators around Alive in Egypt, the world was able to continue to hear the voice of the people in Tahrir Square and the rest of Egypt when they lacked any other line to the outside world.

Transcribing the Voices of Egypt

Alive in Egypt is a project of Small World News, done in collaboration with a number of individuals and organizations, including Meedan. This iteration of Alive in projects were started to add further functionality to the Twitter, Google and SayNow collaboration, Speak2Tweet.
We immediately recognized the potential of Speak2tweet and knew it could be dramatically improved by translating the content for a wider audience. We reached out to our network of translators and started working on a public spreadsheet to help translate all the audio files coming out.
