Nathan Freitas has been writing code since he was eight and hasn’t stopped looking for problems to solve ever since. A lifelong mobile technology enthusiast, his career has included work on DARPA-funded research projects, popular consumer products, award-winning digital art pieces and groundbreaking technology for protests. Steve Wyshywaniuk graduated from Philadelphia’s Temple University in 2006 with a bachelors degree in Film and Video Arts. He got involved with the Alive in Baghdad project in January of ‘06 when he met Brian Conley at the yearly National Conference for Organized Resistance. Sarah Szalavitz wears many hats. She develops on content for Veoh Networks, and also independently produces internet shows. She recently founded 7 Stories, which produces stories across all platforms, including www.aliveinbaghdad.org, www.zaproot.com, www.awkwardsexstories.com, as well as a variety of other online, film and television projects.
Kevin Hart has worked on several projects with Independent media including the documentary film Miami Model, where he met Brian Conley. Kevin holds a bachelor’s degree in cultural anthropology from the University of Florida and provides consultation services to companies seeking access to new media markets through creative web design, website deployment and secure hosting. Omar Abdullah worked as a translator and fixer after the invasion of Iraq. Before coming to Alive in Baghdad, Omar worked primarily with the Christian Peacemaker Teams. In his work with CPT he assisted translation of interviews with Palestinians living in Iraq and former Detainees, as well as meetings between Iraqis and US Embassy officials, arranged by CPT. Omar is working now with Small World News because it gives him a great hope to help the Iraqi people and to show some truth to the world about life in Iraq.
Rob Baker is the founder of Kabimba Media (http://kabimbamedia.com), a Boston-based web development and video studio focusing on online solutions for non-profits. The former senior web developer for Oxfam America, he helped launch several web sites and campaigns, notably including Oxfam America Unwrapped, ACT FAST, and helped managed the ground-up rebuild of their flagship site, oxfamamerica.org. With Oxfam he has also produced, edited, and shot on-site several pieces from field work in Africa — all these projects bringing in about $12 million in donations in four years. Rob now helps coordinates several social events for non-profits in the Boston area such as Twestival and Tweetsgiving, and in his spare time contributes to many open source projects around mobile development for small businesses in Africa. Kaushal Jhalla is a third generation Kenyan, currently living and working in the Bay Area as a technology strategist with a strong career focus on payment systems, mobile computing and grassroot media. He is an actively involved in advising various initiatives such as Ushahidi and Appfrica Labs, Uganda on their use of technology to extend reach and engage communities.
